Understanding gas mains diversions
When do you need one?
A gas mains diversion is required when an existing gas main or service pipe runs through or beneath the footprint of a planned development and cannot remain in its current position without conflicting with the proposed construction works. The pipe must be rerouted to a new alignment before any affected works can proceed.
Gas mains are present on almost every development site, yet conflicts are consistently identified late in the pre-construction phase. The diversion process involves Gas Network Operator approval, design, GIRS-accredited contractor appointment and completion sign-off — all of which take time. A gas mains conflict identified at the groundworks stage rather than the planning stage can cause serious programme disruption.
Engaging us as early as possible gives us the maximum opportunity to protect your construction programme. The GNO application process alone requires adequate lead time, and this cannot be fast-tracked once works have already begun on adjacent areas of the site.

We coordinate the full S278 process
The majority of gas mains run beneath adopted highways, roads, footpaths and verges. When a development requires a diversion of one of these mains, the works fall within highway land and require coordination with the local highway authority under a Section 278 Agreement, in addition to the Gas Network Operator application.
This is one of the most complex and time-consuming aspects of gas mains diversions and the area where inexperienced facilitators most often cause programme delays. The highway authority process runs separately to the GNO process. Both must be managed simultaneously and in alignment with each other and with the construction programme.

How long does a gas mains diversion take?
Timescales vary significantly depending on the GNO area and whether the diversion runs through highway land requiring Section 278 coordination. Simple service pipe alterations can sometimes be completed within a few weeks. Full mains diversions typically take several months from GNO application to completion sign-off. Early engagement is essential to protect your construction programme.
Can works continue near a gas main while the diversion is being planned?
Works in close proximity to a live gas main require a specific method statement, gas main protection measures and in many cases the physical presence of a GNO representative or GIRS contractor during any excavation. You must never excavate near a live gas main without the GNO's written consent and appropriate protective measures in place. We can advise on the exact requirements for your site and liaise with the GNO to agree safe working protocols while the full diversion programme is being progressed.
What is the difference between a gas mains diversion and a service alteration?
A gas mains diversion involves rerouting an adopted public gas main vested in the GNO. A service pipe alteration involves rerouting the private supply pipe from the main to a specific property, generally simpler, faster and involving lower-pressure pipework. We assess the exact requirements of your site conflict and advise on the most appropriate and cost-effective approach at no obligation.
